Work Package 6 - Phase 2

Awareness raising and recommandations

Led by Agoa Sanctuary and WWF-NL

Objective

To develop and disseminate knowledge products, awareness raising and decision support tools from the outputs of the project

The WP6 represents the overall and final objective of CAMAC. It aims to provide governing bodies — and more broadly all environmental stakeholders — with information on the distribution and movements of marine megafauna in the WCR, as well as on human activities and their interactions within the region. The objective is to foster collaboration among stakeholders, support informed decision-making, and guide the development of effective policies and programs for marine megafauna conservation.

This will be achieved by:

  • Presenting updated  knowledge on marine megafauna distribution and movement to identify and limit negative interactions with human activities;
  • Identifying hotspots of interactions with marine megafauna and fisheries and co-developing, with local stakeholders (fishermen, government agencies, NGOs), concerted, concrete recommendations and actions adapted to each territory in order to promote optimal coexistence between fishing activities and the preservation of marine megafauna.
  • Establishing data sharing agreements, protocols and publicly available databases of the data collected through CAMAC.
  • Transmitting the best practices to inform youth to motivate them to take action for marine megafauna conservation.
  • Presenting recommendations on effective management tools and information on how to achieve policy goals.

Key steps

To reach these goals, the work package 6 will follow several key steps such as  :

  • Collect species distribution data;
  • Collect data related to human activities;
  • Create mapping tool;
  • Collect recommendations from stakeholders regarding species and activities;
  • Synthesise all of this information to prepare summary reports and an executive summary for decision-makers;
  • Disseminate the results to national and regional public authorities and decision-makers by participating among other actions, in regional events (e.g. COP SPAW, COP OECS, CARIFORUM, etc.).

The stakeholders

The recommendations that will be made, through the dissemination of deliverables to national or regional governing bodies and environmental stakeholders, aim at supporting the implementation of the most effective conservation policies and actions in the Wider Caribbean Region to those target groups.

All along the project, specific care and thinking will focus on how to better integrate and use the data and information acquired, to convey the most appropriate messages and take action through a collaborative approach with our stakeholders. The WP leads focus on their relevant groups of stakeholders, that will continue to expand as the project progresses. The CAMAC project team will take advantage of targeted encounters, workshops, conferences (local, regional and international) to mature and develop the final deliverables through co-creation.

Our main stakeholders are:

  • Conservation organisations and management practitioners
  • Research organisations and scientists
  • (Small-scale) fishers
  • Government representatives / policy makers
  • Caribbean inhabitants, in particular youth

       As a conclusive Work Package, the fruits of this work will appear towards the end of the project, in 2027.
