Sailing in the Agoa Marine Mammal Sanctuary
For shipping stakeholders, this guide aims to inform mariners about marine mammals present in the Eastern Caribbean, their habitats, the issues linked to maritime traffic and the measures to reduce pressure. It brings clear information on matters such as collisions between ships and whales or underwater noise pollution. It also provides concrete actions that companies can implement to reduce these impacts. The knowledge presented is still incomplete, but it does provide an initial picture of the cohabitation between ships and cetaceans in the French West Indies.
This document was largely inspired by "A Mariner's Guide to Whales in the Northwest Atlantic" was produced by the Marine Mammal Observation Network (MMON) in Canada, World Wildlife Fund Canada (WWF-Canada) and the Shipping Federation of Canada. It is designed to be updated as new information becomes available, in collaboration with representatives of the maritime industry.
